BIOGRAPHY

Brisbane-based pianist Brieley Cutting has given solo and chamber music performances in London, Europe, and New Zealand, and performances in Australia for Musica Viva, 4MBS radio, and ABC radio and television.  Brieley is currently  pianist in chamber groups Collusion, the Australian Chamber Musicians, and the Turner and Cutting Piano Duo, who have been described as  “a joy to watch and hear” ( Suzannah Conway, The Courier Mail).

As an associate artist, Brieley has performed with such artists as Michael Cox (flute) and Alexander Baillie (cello), and collaborates regularly with various staff from the Queensland Conservatorium. 2012 will be Brieley’s second year as Artistic Director of the Commercial Road Chamber Music Series in Newstead, Brisbane, and will see Brieley continue her studies for a Doctor of Musical Arts, her studies being supported by Griffith University.

Highlights this year will include recording projects with Collusion, the Australian Chamber Musicians, and as a double piano duet with pianists Dr Stephen Emmerson, Angela Turner, and Stewart Kelly, and concert appearances with Collusion in the Crossbows and Restrung Festivals, later followed by a tour of the ACT and Tasmania.

As a soloist, Brieley has appeared with such orchestras as the Queensland Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Adelaide Symphony, and Nizchny-Novgorod Orchestra.  Solo competition successes include second prize in the 2010 Kerikeri International Piano Competition in New Zealand, and Grand Finalist in the 2006 Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards.

Brieley completed her undergraduate studies with Pamela Page and Oleg Stepanov at the Queensland Conservatorium at age 18, graduating with First Class Honours and a performance of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.1 with the Queensland Conservatorium Orchestra. Brieley holds postgraduate degrees from the Royal College of Music in London (Postgraduate Diploma in Performance with Distinction) and the Queensland Conservatorium (Master of Music in Performance) where she studied with Ruth Nye and Natasha Vlassenko respectively, and she has also studied at the Australian National Academy of Music (2002-2005) with such mentors as Timothy Young and Rita Reichman. Brieley’s studies have been supported by scholarships such as the Brisbane Club Award, Owen Fletcher Postgraduate Scholarship, Tait Memorial Trust Award, Australian Music Foundation Scholarship, and the David Paul Landa Scholarship.
